As we step into another year, with so many uncertainties to face, we are determined to continue to grow our presence and impact within our community despite the continued restrictions. We are delighted by the number of people joining our Facebook group which now has a membership of 362.
Book Swap on the High Street
Our plans to move forward with a book swap in the Phone box on the High Street ,are beginning to shape up. We are looking for wood we can recycle for shelving as we now have secured a volunteer to build and fit them. We can then start to stock it and as soon as it is ready to go we will announce it so keep your eyes peeled! We will also publish guidance as to how to use this community resources responsibly so that we can all benefit from it. If you have any wood that you can donate or If you feel able to volunteer to be part of a team of checkers to help maintain and keep it orderly, then please do get in touch…Many hands make light work.
New Blog Reducing Single Use Plastic
We have started a monthly blog in which we will be discussing different ideas to help reduce single use plastic items in our homes. From shampoo to clingfilm if you need some suggestions to get you started making those important small changes, then please pop by each month for tips and pointers for what you might like to try. We welcome feedback on your own experiences and efforts to tackle this important sustainability issue.
Junior Reporters News Update
As we are back with so many of our schools closed and battling with the trials of home learning, how about taking a deep breath and spend some time watching the birds in your garden? We would love the children to join us in encouraging, discovering, enjoying and learning about our feathered garden visitors.
Keep an eye on our Junior News section for upcoming details on this exciting project and how your child can contribute by sending us their drawings, writing etc. We will also be offering suggestions and links to ideas for encouraging birds into your garden and making your own bird feeder. So much learning possible while having fun and growing their interest in the natural world and environmental issues.
Terracycle Recycling Scheme
We have already mentioned wanting to get this scheme up and running in the village.
Until we can get more volunteers to get this scheme up and running in Shrivenham, you can join this Facebook group.
Lisa up in Highworth would be more than happy to accept any items that fit into the categories for this scheme. On the FB page you can find full details of what she can accept and contact her to arrange a drop off or collection.
For information on how you can volunteer to be a collection point for Sustainable Shrivenham and for more information about what can be collected, please go to the Home Page on our website.
Committee Members Needed
Sadly work commitments have led to us loosing Alie King as a committee member. We would like to thank her for all her contributions to getting Sustainable Shrivenham up and running and we wish her well for the future. We are sure she will continue to engage with the group as a member.
If you would like to increase your impact on sustainability, joining a group is one of the most effective ways to make a difference. We are expanding the committee to make sure that the burden on time is manageable as most of us have other jobs and family commitments too.
For more information please email us at sustainableshrivenham@gmail.com.
And Finally…..
We are always looking for suggestions from you as to how we can best support your sustainability journey.
If you have any requests for talks or demonstrations that we can (for now) deliver online, then please do let us know.
Keep safe and well and watch out for next month’s update
